Caribbean Essential Fish Habitat
The content of this web page was developed in 1998 cooperatively by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and the Caribbean Fishery Management Council to assist with the identification of Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) in coastal waters of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These and other products were used by the Council to amend their fishery management plans in accordance with the EFH requirements of the re-authorized Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Management and Conservation Act (NMFS 1998).
Information on current research projects conducted by CCMA's Biogeography Branch in the Caribbean can be found at http://ccma.nos.noaa.gov/about/biogeography/projects.html.
Current information on Essential Fish Habitat in U.S. waters of the Caribbean is available from NOAA/NMFS Southeast Regional Office at http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/dhc/efh.htm, and from NOAA/NMFS Office of Habitat Conservation at http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/habitat/habitatprotection/profile/caribbean.htm.
The Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) is a cooperative program for collection, management and dissemination of fishery-independent data and information in the southeastern United States, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean. More information on this program is available at http://www.gsmfc.org/seamap.html.
